Rated 3 out of 5 by More challenging than expected I have several Susanne Deason DVDs and have liked them all, but I was a bit surprised that this yoga practice is considerably more advanced than I expected. I enjoy practicing yoga with several friends in my area and all of us are in our 50's and 60's. Many of the balance poses are pretty much impossible for our 50-something bodies to achieve. There are also no modified poses demonstrated so you're kind of on your own as far as modifying the poses. However, it's a beautiful workout and certainly gives you something to strive for. I would recommend this for intermediate to advanced practitioners who are already in good shape. January 16, 2010
Rated 4 out of 5 by nice yoga practice I like the extra feature of the practice for when you are menstruating because it has poses helpful for reducing cramps and is a nice length for that time of month, but the regular practice is a very basic and has only a few slightly challenging poses. I currently have Stress Relief Yoga with Suzanne Deason DVD and it is great. Some of the moves feel a little rushed but I like the gentleness of the moves. Maybe a DVD that has a 30 minute workout. Is it possible to lose weight with Yoga that isn"t difficult and stressful to do as well as raise cortisol levels?

You might want to try our Mayo Clinic Wellness Solutions for Menopause DVD (05-52384). In it there is a 40 minute yoga session that is specifically for Menopause relief. As far as yoga being effective for weight loss it can be effective but you need to get your heart rate going in order to taking it out of a stretch like activity. Well the less stress full yoga is great for the mind and relaxing and realigning the body you wont experience much weight loss. Everything I can find says that high levels of cortisol increase belly fat how ever they do say meditation and gentle yoga can help balance cortisol levels so Mayo Clinic DVD might be just what you need. However you may also want to try stopping by your local yoga studio for a restorative class and showing up a little early to see if they have any specific poses that will help you relax. I wouldn't be afraid to do more fast paced yoga because you will eventually find your self relaxing even though you are breaking a sweat.

She has never practiced yoga, is in moderate physical shape but not great, lacks flexibility and upper body strength but is interested in trying yoga. I would love some ideas!

Most of the Yoga DVD's available on Gaiam.com either feature 30 or 60 minute workouts. The Yoga Conditioning for Women DVD features one 60-minute program and one 20-minute program. I recommend purchasing a couple of Gaiam DVD's that feature more then one program, and mixing your workout up to complete your ideal 40-45 minute practice.
