PrintHow the Sun Alarm works:
With the low levels of light utilized in dawn simulation devices, one might wonder how it can be possible to actually wake up to it. The answer lies in the fact that human eyes are ultra-sensitive to light in the early morning. As a result of having been in darkness all night long, they are able to perceive and register even the smallest amounts of light.
When our eyes detect this increased level of light, a signal is sent to the brain's pineal gland. The pineal then triggers the production of the hormone serotonin, which causes us to slowly awaken. This natural method of waking leaves us feeling refreshed and energized.

Sleep CD:
For many, quieting the mind to prepare for sleep is a nightly chore; yet restoring healthy sleep cycles lies within your own power. Whenever you find your thoughts keeping you awake, listen to the soothing techniques and music in this program created and guided by naturopathic physician James Rouse — and get to sleep fast. James Rouse holds a doctorate in naturopathic medicine from National College in Portland, Oregon, the oldest accredited naturopathic medical school in the nation. His multidisciplinary background includes psychology and yoga as well as post-doctorate work in Chinese, Tibetan and Ayurvedic medicine. He is a true believer in total well-being, a lifestyle that empowers you to do what you love most and achieve your best in life.

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 2 out of 5 by Disappointed This alarm clock is NOT easy to use. I can't even figure out how to turn the alarm off for weekends. I thought I had it programmed for one of the pre-set sounds as the alarm, but I only get the radio. The LED display light is too bright, and must be turned off, but then it is so dark, you can't see the time. The wake up light is more blue than yellow. Blue is great for sundown, but morning light should simulate the sun, not the evening sky. My biggest complaint is how complicated the controls are. I will need to get a different alarm clock. I'm sorry I wasted $80. March 20, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Hard to figure out and does not show time. It took me forever to figure out how to work this clock with the instructions. I finally figured it out, but it does not show the time. This is most irritating. Do not buy this clock kit unless you have a Ph.D. in engineering.  May 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Alarm Clock Ever I love this alarm clock. It is so easy to get up and get going after it wakes me. It is a very gentle awakening. May 27, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Worth The Investment I am waking up much happier and much easier thanks to this light. I HATE waking up in the dark and usually hit the snooze multiple times. Haven't needed it since I got this alarm. The radio is hard to tune and never very clear, but I like waking up to the cricket sounds better anyway. Definitely need the instructions to set this clock. I'd buy it again. March 22, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice, nice, nice. Really nice. Setting it up is not intuitive, but I managed. Surprised at the military style clock but perhaps there is an option I haven't found yet. So nice to have the light go on in the morning (3AM for me). It's so gentle and, I too, have the birds chirping. Seeing the time - just a push on one of the buttons on the left of the ball the clock lights up for about 5 to 8 seconds. Glad I purchased this. March 9, 2012

They last for 20 minutes and stay at the volume you start them at. They do stop abruptly. I stopped using them at night.

Answer:
I will have to have the web team update that info. The clock takes a Cr 2030 cell battery for it's back up. On the bottom you will find a quarter-ish sized cover that you turn with a coin on the bottom of the clock. It's a little tricky to get the cover off I used a piece of tape on my finger to get it off.

If you push any of the buttons, the display will light up so you can see the time, but it goes off so the light of the display does not interfere with sleep.

Answer:
No, it's just 1 brightness. It needs to be below your eye level to make it out because the display tilts up. If you have higher bed side tables you won't be able to see it.

Answer:
Yes. I use it at it's highest setting. It's only bright enough if it's right next to you. it wouldn't be bright enough if it were on the opposite bedside table as you.

Answer:
Yes, you can actually turn the light on and off manually or you could set it up like a sunset function so it will automatically shut off.

When the sun alarm is at maximum brightness, how does it compare to a standard 60 or 100 watt light bulb? Does the light really fade on, or does it step up at set levels?

Answer:
It steos up and it isn't as bright as a regular 60w. I don't usually notice it in the mornings, but you can really see the step down when you are trying to get to sleep.

Answer:
I would compare it to a 40 watt bulb, frosted white. Not glaring. It increases in steps but there are 10 steps so it feels very gradual except for the the very first one. If you are facing the clock when it happens, you will notice the light come on. Gentle compared to regular clocks

Answer:
The fade on the light is smooth so it shouldnt jump huge intervals at a time, instead it will come on gradually . The light is equivalent to the brightness of a 40watt bulb or 230lux.
