Water shortages are quickly becoming a global environmental concern, and almost 60% of our water consumption is for residential irrigation. Just as solar energy is a natural and renewable source of energy, collecting rainwater is one of the easiest ways to save both money and precious natural resources, especially in dry climates and during times of drought. Simply place your watering can under the spigot or attach your hose and treat thirsty plants to a refreshing drink.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Nice Idea, But... I love the idea of rain barrels but buyers should be aware that a rain barrel of this size fills very quickly - 1/2" of rain off a normal size roof, one under each of two gutters, will fill up your average rain barrel. Everything else after that overflows. Either connect a bunch of rainbarrels or invest in a much larger cistern if you are serious about collecting rain to water your garden, etc. November 7, 2009
Rated 4 out of 5 by I was surprised by the quality of this barrel. Only negative is the spouts are plastic instead of something more durable. Only time will tell. Working great so far. July 19, 2009

    1. Since this barrel is made of food grade polyethylene, is it safe for the temporary passage/storage of drinking water?

    2. What is the diameter of the top opening?

    3. Is there a fitted screen inside the barrel under the lid?

    4. Is a diagram of the barrel available?

    Thanks

    Answer:
The Great American Rain Barrel is intended for garden use only. DO NOT USE BARREL TO STORE DRINKING WATER. The opening is about 21" inches in diameter. There is not a screen under the lid. Unfortunately there is not a diagram available of the rain barrel.

Thank you for your question. This is a very sturdy material, but the plastic could be damaged if the barrel is full and it is subjected to repeated freezing.

I'd like to attach a garden hose to the barrel for long distance watering. The photo shows what appears to be a small spigot, but no other outlet for a hose.

How long a hose can you use to water? Our garden is 60 feet from the edge of the house, would the water make it that far?

    Answer:
The head pressure comes from the force of having the water flow out of the barrel. To increase pressure: The base on which the barrel will stand must be level and secure. A typical rain barrel will weigh over 500 pounds when full. Concrete block or pavers make good substitutes if a patio surface or driveway is not available. Concrete blocks or pavers also raise the barrel off the ground, which increases water pressure coming out of the hose.
