Trudie Styler's Warrior Yoga DVD

UNICEF Ecuador Water Project

On a visit to Ecuador in May 2007, Trudie Styler witnessed the environmental damage caused by oil exploitation in the Ecuadorian rainforest. She saw the devastating impact that the environmental damage and lack of safe water was having on rural communities, including the lives of the most vulnerable: women and children.

Of the 30,000 people that have been exposed to oil contamination through air, water and land in the provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana, half are children. The incidences of cancer including leukemia, miscarriages, skin disorders and respiratory illnesses in the affected region are many times higher than the national average.

Keen to help the families she met, Trudie enlisted the support of The Rainforest Fund, UNICEF and the Frente de la Defensa de la Amazonia for a pilot project in which water containers were designed and installed in areas with high levels of contamination, severe health needs, poverty and minimal access to basic services.

The specially designed water barrels enable families, health centers and schools to have clean water, even in the most polluted areas. The water containers are a dual tank installation with a filter system collecting and converting highly toxic water into pure drinking water for storage and use.

The project proposal was devised in December 2007 with UNICEF Ecuador and implementation of the pilot began in 2008. Families selected to receive the first containers were those in the most highly contaminated areas. Working with the local community and tradesmen, the water barrels are easy to install on rural houses and shelters.

Thanks to the Rainforest Fund and Trudie Styler, the pilot project is now in its second year of work, with over 125 water containers installed, providing clean water to more than 4,000 people.

For approximately $500, one water container can be built and maintained, giving a family, health care center or school access to clean water for 30–40 years.

Trudie Styler is an actress, film producer, director, human rights activist, environmentalist, organic farmer and UNICEF Ambassador. In 1988, Trudie and her husband Sting started the Rainforest Foundation, an organization devoted to protecting rainforests and their indigenous peoples. Trudie's charitable works for human rights and the environment have been recognized by many award-giving bodies. As an Ambassador for UNICEF, Trudie is committed to working to improve the lives of impoverished and exploited children all over the world. In 1990, Trudie and Sting moved to Lake House in the English countryside and, determined to raise their children on a fresh and healthy diet, set about converting the 200 acres of farmland to organic status. Trudie's passionate concerns for the environment and human rights motivate many of her career choices, and are reflected most clearly in her documentary films and fundraising activities.

James D’Silva was born and raised in Goa, India, before moving to England to continue his training in classical and contemporary dance. Ten years ago he opened up his own Pilates studio in London – Bombay Gymkhana – and from this base his reputation has become well established among his many devoted and celebrated clients. James teaches his own personally devised workouts, which incorporate Pilates, yoga and dance. Using a multifunctional workout machine he created, the garuda, James specializes in exercise regimes that increase flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles as well as improve structural fitness.
