On May 4, 2007, a deadly tornado struck Greensburg, Kansas, ripping the town to shreds. Ninety-five percent of the town was destroyed, 11 lives were tragically lost, and survivors were left without homes, businesses, schools and basic city services. Greensburg was gone, and it seemed that all was lost for its residents. Out of the rubble came resilience and courage from the people of Greensburg, not only to rebuild their community but to send a bold message to the rest of the nation. Greensburg committed to building smarter and better, determined to make their town a model for the future of cities of all sizes throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world. They decided to rebuild as a model green community.
In an extraordinary 13-part series, co-produced by acclaimed actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio and award-winning producer Craig Piligian, viewers meet the people of this amazing town and follow the daily struggle of a community fighting its way back from the edge of extinction. See how the lives and livelihoods of Greensburg’s citizens changed during this massive reconstruction effort. Struggles abound as the city government strives to build the greenest buildings in the country and citizens try to stay patient living in temporary FEMA trailers.
Still, the spirit of the Greensburg citizens is what makes the journey most inspirational, as ordinary people of great character choose to create a better life for themselves and their children. The dependable-yet-futurist city planner, the "good old boy" mayor and a bright high school senior all share a deep connection to the city, both past and future. The rebuilding of Greensburg presents a historic opportunity. One rural town on the plains of Kansas vividly demonstrates that sustainable, eco-friendly building is an imperative path to the future.
4-DVD set features:
DISC 1
The Tornado
Meet the townspeople of Greensburg and hear firsthand accounts of how they survived one of the largest tornadoes in U.S. history. Starting with a clean slate, the town decided to rebuild the entire community as energy efficient and green as possible. Follow the personal stories of the people and the massive rebuilding effort of a Midwest farming town on the decline, as it renews into a sustainable model of eco-living.
Homecoming
Four months after a tornado wiped out the town, the 1,400 residents have no homes to return to, only FEMA trailers. The residents try to boost their home town spirit with a homecoming parade and football game. City Administrator Steve Hewitt hires an architectural firm to create a blueprint for the sustainable town, a master plan. World-renowned environmentalist John Picard invites some of the high school kids to a Greenbuild Conference in Chicago and opens their eyes to life off the grid.
The Building Begins
The rebuilding of Greensburg is slow going. With little money and scarce materials the town struggles to not only come back but build back greener and stronger. Despite the many obstacles, buildings are going up and City Administrator Steve Hewitt pushes the city council to make a historic decision that could catapult Greensburg into the record books as the greenest city on Earth.
Ice Storm
It’s Christmas in Greensburg and an ice storm has swept over the town, stopping rebuilding and giving the residents another challenge to overcome. Communication is as frozen as the trees on Main Street and the townspeople don’t feel connected to what’s happening. Businesses are clamoring for spaces in the downtown incubator. Something has to be done, so officials call the first town hall meeting since the tornado. All that Greensburg wants for Christmas is its town back.
