How long do the water purifier filter candles last?
This depends on the quantity and quality of the water going through the water purifier. The greater the degree of contamination and water usage, the candle's life span decreases. In metropolitan areas the candles typically last between 6 and 9 months.

When should the water purifier candles be replaced?
Purifying candles should be replaced when a noticeable chemical returns to the purified water. This will happen when the charcoal inside becomes totally saturated. The candle does not need replacing just because it is working more slowly.

Why, when and how should the filter candles be cleaned?
When the water flow from the candle slows noticeably this is an indication the candle should be cleaned. Solid contaminates in the water are blocking the fine pores on the surface of the ceramic candle and must be cleaned off. The candle should be cleaned by removing from the purifier, running under cold water and being "scrubbed" quite vigorously with a stiff brush or scouring cloth or use the back of a butter knife to scrape off a layer of the ceramic.

How do I install a new or replacement filter candle/cartridge?
No tools are necessary; place one washer on side of threaded stem of filter, place stem of filter through hole inside upper terracotta unit, add the second washer and hand-tighten with wing nut. After installing a new filter candle, let the water run through the purifier and new candle. Do not drink the first few gallons, as the filter candle will need some time to adjust. During this period the water will not be clear. Keep refilling the water purifier and let the water run through the filter until the water is crystal clear.

How do I maintain the filter candle?
For Best results, the ceramic candle needs to be cleaned regularly and should be replaced periodically. The frequency will depend on the condition of the water supply. A reduced flow of water into the bottom chamber is an indication that cleaning is necessary. To clean the candle, first remove it from the purifier unit. Hold the candle under gently running water and using a stiff brush or the back of a butter knife removes the visible impurities from the candles surface. Scrub off the outer layer of the ceramic filter with a kitchen type scourer (e.g. back of a butter knife) scrubbing it in an up and down motion under running tap. Never use soap or detergents on the candle.
