|Gaiam’s “green” packaging
Here at Gaiam, we strive to make our shipping operations easy on the planet. Every Gaiam order is shipped in the most environmentally responsible way possible. Learn more below about our “ugly boxes” philosophy and all of our green shipping initiatives.
Want to do your part?
First, ALL of our green packaging can be recycled at your local recycling center. Want to do even more? Consider adding Go Zero® to your order!
|“Ugly” reused boxes – 100% reclaimed, 100% recyclable
We believe that “ugly boxes save trees.” Rather than using a new box for every shipment, we reuse as many boxes as we can to help lessen the impact of waste in our landfills. Please recycle our ugly boxes, too!
Gaiam corrugate – 30% recycled, 100% recyclable
If your box has a Gaiam logo, it contains up to 30% post-consumer recycled materials, the maximum that still makes for a sturdy shipping box, ensuring your products arrive in tip-top condition. These boxes are 100% recyclable; place them in your curbside recycle bin.
Renature® packing “peanuts” – 100% natural, 100% biodegradable
Instead of sending the byproducts from potato and corn processing to a landfill, Renature reclaims them and converts them into eco-smart packing peanuts. These off-white “peanuts” are 100% biodegradable and water soluble, and they won’t pollute groundwater. And while they’re not made from consumable food products, they won’t harm your pets if eaten. To dispose of Renature peanuts, you can add them your composter, dispose of them in your garbage disposal, flush them down a toilet or drain, dissolve them in the yard with a hose or reuse them for your own shipping needs.
Newsprint – 100% reclaimed, 100% recyclable
The paper we use is from end rolls too small to be used by newspapers. Rather than sending newsprint end rolls to a landfill, suppliers send them to us for use in packaging. The cardboard core in each roll of newsprint is returned to the suppliers to be used again and again. Newsprint can be recycled with your regular newspapers.
Mailers – 95% or 35% recycled, 100% recyclable
Our paper-based padded mailers are made from 95% recycled paper fibers, 55% from post-consumer content. Our plastic bag mailers are 35% recycled. Both reduce fuel use due to lighter shipping weight and are 100% recyclable at your local recycling center.
Shredded corrugate – 100% reclaimed, 100% recyclable
Not all of the boxes we receive can be reused as “ugly” boxes. In this case, we shred them to use as fill in packages. Shredded corrugate can be recycled anywhere corrugate is accepted.
Geami paper – 60% recycled, 100% recyclable
A revolutionary protective packaging system, Geami starts as a roll of recycled and recyclable Kraft paper that is die-cut with thousands of slits that expand into hexagonal cells to form a 3-dimensional wrapping and cushioning material. Geami paper can be recycled with your regular newspapers.
Recycled-content catalogs – 30% recycled, 100% recyclable
We source our 30% post-consumer waste paper from recycled paper and a sustainable forest managed by the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC®). PEFC is the world’s largest nongovernmental organization that promotes sustainably managed forests. Like FSC, PEFC ensures we’re using the highest-quality paper at the lowest possible environmental cost. Catalogs are 100% recyclable anywhere magazines are accepted for recycling.
Environmental benefits are calculated based on research done by the Environmental Defense Fund, Conservatree and other members of the Paper Task Force, independent of PEFC. Click here for more details, including our support of reforestation efforts.
