In our worldwide search for unique fair trade organizations, one of the most powerful groups we met was in Cambodia. In a nation still reeling from decades of civil war and brutality, many Cambodians continue to struggle to survive. Hagar International, based in Phnom Penh, strives to assist and empower extremely vulnerable women who been trafficked, abused and abandoned. In their work with these amazing women, Hagar offers a network that enables them to transform themselves from victims to craftspeople, completely altering the course of their lives and the lives of their children. Hagar International teaches women marketable skills creating high-quality products such as recycled rice bag totes, silk organza scarves and sterling silver jewelry, while assisting with child care, housing and health needs along the way. By creating commerce with these women, we empower them to move beyond poverty and helplessness.
