Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 35 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Back Wave & Spinal Stenosis I have a lot of pain with misaligned & compressed vertibrae and using the Back Wave gives me relief. I have to use a small pillow under my head and bend my knees a little, but I feel so much better after using it for 15 or 20 minutes a couple of times a week. December 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by S T R E T C H Ahhhhh I wondered why I bought this shortly after placing the order - it just caught my eye and WOW - whatever was guiding me to make the purchase was on the $$. The first time I tried it I felt an immediate difference in my lower back like my spine was 'breathing.' Unlike other reviewers, I don't have chronic back pain, but do travel and this is fantastic to come home to. Less expensive and more convenient than a chiropractor or masseuse (although, well...it is not quite that good!!) Great purchase! March 6, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by wave bye bye to back pain I have always had pretty good posture, but I find that sometimes my back is more reluctant to comply with my posture requests. To whip it into shape, I break out my wave. I then do two or three of the exercises included. The most relaxing (to me) is when I lay on the floor with the wave under my hips and gently rock it. I can feel all the muscles in my thighs, hips and back relax and let go. Also, I am only 5'1" tall, so most couches and chairs are too deep for me. I just put the wave on the back of the couch or chair, and it gives me the extra inches I need to fit the chair. Not only does this help my feet touch the floor, it also gives my back a bit of a massage because my spine is cradled in the channel. I thought the wave was pricey, but with Giaim's return policy, I figured I had nothing to lose. If it didn't work or I didn't like it, I could return it. Sorry, Giaim, I'm keeping it. I believe it was worth every penny. October 21, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very useful for stretching my back I am a little uncertain regarding the hip stretching with the wave and would welcome clarification  March 14, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Wish it had better instructions I agree with those who complained about the instructions for use.  I tried it twice today, and my back feels more rather than less stiff. I had great hopes for this product, but I have yet to use it comfortably. I'm sure that if I still had the box and the shipping insert that I'd send it back. February 3, 2013

I purchased this item several months ago and have hardly used it because it is extremely painful! Obviously I'm doing something wrong because the reviews are great! I place it on the floor and lie on it but if I don't place a pillow under my head, it is very painful. Thanks

Answer:
It works by supporting your lower back in it's natural position to help align the spine and release tense muscles. Everyone's comfort level is different, but if you continue to use it after a while you should feel relief. As far as the pillow goes you want to make sure your using one that isn't so thick that it places your head at an unnatural alignment. What I typically recommend for yoga students who find savasana uncomfortable for their neck and head might work for this. Take a towel or a blanket and roll it until it's about as thick as your fist. With the remaining unrolled portion fold it over a couple of times. Then take the roll and place it under your neck so you can use the folded portion as a cushion.
